Is IPL hair removal dangerous?

Laser hair removal is popular among people who want a hair removal solution that is more permanent than other methods. Using lasers to remove hair works by preventing the follicles from forming new hairs.

PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal works by killing hair follicles. The laser only damages hair follicles during an active hair growth cycle. For that reason, it requires several treatments (usually a minimum of 5-7) at one-week intervals to stop hair growth completely.

For some people, laser hair removal is not completely permanent. You may need a maintenance treatment at monthly intervals to prevent individual hairs from growing back.

Often the treatment is not cheap. Professional laser hair removal can cost over DKK 1,000 per treatment and it may take several sessions (or more) before the desired results are achieved. Smooth legs can thus easily cost many thousands of kroner.

In the meantime, you can order an IPL hair removal laser at home for under DKK 1000. This is for many an advantageous investment. However, one must be aware of the advantages and disadvantages.

WHAT IS IPL? - ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

There are two types of home devices for permanent hair removal. One is a true laser and the other uses intense pulsed light (IPL). Both types remove hair, and both are less powerful than the machine you experience during treatment in a clinic.

At-home IPL is safe for amateurs to use, so you don't have to worry about injuring yourself or over-treating yourself to get smooth skin (always make sure to follow the instructions exactly though).

The disadvantages of IPL in your own home are that it may take a few more treatments to become completely hair-free than with treatment in a clinic, as the machine is less powerful. However, this is offset by the fact that you only pay for the machine and not for the treatments. In addition, clinic machines are often larger, which is why a full-body treatment in your own home can take a little longer than in the clinics.

Comforth IPL can be set to "auto mode". Here, the machine flashes automatically as the machine is moved along the skin, which provides a faster and easier treatment.

SAFETY AND RISKS OF IPL

Sensitive skin – There are no complications with sensitive, dry or oily skin. If your skin is very sensitive, you may need to use a lower strength level than recommended. It will take a little longer to see results, but other than that there will be no problems.

Suntan – You must NOT use IPL if your skin is tanned. Wait 48 hours after the tan has disappeared before using IPL again.

Rosacea - IPL is actually used to treat rosacea. However, the type of IPL that you use for hair removal is not exactly the same, and therefore you cannot use Comforth IPL to treat rosacea. However, IPL hair removal will not worsen rosacea, and you can easily use the machine if you have rosacea.

You must NOT use IPL if you have the following skin conditions:
- Hypesthesia
- Contact eczema
- Photosensitive skin

If you do not have one of the above skin conditions, it is 100% safe to use IPL. Comforth IPL is both FDA, CE, ROHS and FCC certified, so you can be comfortable with your treatments.

NOTE: We recommend that you always do a spot test before treatment to check how your skin reacts. We recommend NOT using IPL if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

WHO SHOULD USE IPL AT HOME?

One of the biggest disadvantages of home laser hair removal is that IPL does not work on all hair and skin colours. IPL affects the pigment in the hair follicle and is only effective when there is sufficient melanin in the hair follicles and sufficient contrast between skin and hair. IPL is therefore most effective for people with fair skin and dark hair.

People with darker skin are at risk of burns. IPL does not work on very light hair, as the melanin level is not sufficiently high. Likewise, red hair has a type of melanin called pheomelanin, which does not absorb the energy from IPL, which is why the treatment does not work on red hair. See the charts below to assess whether IPL will be able to remove your hair growth and what strength level you should use with Comforth IPL
